The Karen Lawrence Run for Ronald McDonald House Chattanooga
Wed, Dec 31, 2014
About This Activity
Since 1979, the Karen Lawrence Run has been held on New Year’s Eve in downtown Chattanooga hosted by the Sports Barn. Karen Lawrence, at the age of 11 and having battled acute lymphocytic leukemia for the past year and a half, started the first race. Less than 3 months later Karen lost her battle, and the Lawrence Family has proudly been carrying on the tradition since. It is in her honor, and with her courage of conviction, that her family, friends and scores of volunteers and supporters have given of their time, talent and resources to keep this event going year to year. The love and compassion of the city behind these efforts, the many generous sponsors who have helped defer the cost of the event, and the faithfulness of the participants have made it possible to give to our beneficiary for 35 years—St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—in excess of $750,000. It was Karen’s dream to “give back” to the hospital that so desperately tried to save her life. Going forward, the Lawrence Family has chosen a new sole beneficiary, a local organization that has also been close to their hearts—The Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga (RMHC). The Ronald McDonald House keeps families of critically-ill children together and allows them to fully participate in their child’s medical care, so it is fitting that a family so dedicated to causes such as these would continue Karen’s legacy in Chattanooga. We ask you to consider becoming a part of the Karen Lawrence Run so that Karen’s legacy may continue to help children and their families who need the Ronald McDonald House. A record number of participants – over 700—ran or walked in 2013, and each year the number increases. We want your help to make 2014 even more successful by participating in The Karen Lawrence Run for the Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga. Whether you are a serious runner, a family looking to walk through downtown and across the Walnut St. Bridge into Northshore's Coolidge Park, or an intermediate/junior runner, there is an event for you this New Year's Eve, 2014; a 4-mile Main Event and a 2-mile FunRun/Walk. Come join us, use the facilities at The Sport's Barn to shower and get ready for a night on the town, ringing in the New Year, 2015. There is no better way to end one year and start another - by helping raise money for those that so desperately need it - the patients and families of The Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga.
Event details and schedule
Pre-Registration at www,active.com ends Dec 30th @ midnight.
Mail-in registration must be postmarked by the 24th of Dec.
Race-day registration starts at 4pm @ The Sport's Barn / Downtown Chattanooga (Market St. & 3rd St.)
4-Mile Main Event starts promptly at 7pm with the 2-mile FunRun/Walk to follow immediately behind. The 4-mile runners will be staged in front of the 2-mile participants in a "stacked start" with both races starting at 7pm. This will give the faster "timed" runners the ability to get out in front and separate themselves from the Junior Runners and FunRun/Walkers.
Disposable chips will be provided to the 4-Mile runners by Scenic City MultiSport and attached to the backside of the runners bib. Timing points will show runner's time on large flat screens at the Start/Finish Line and at the half-way point in Coolidge Park close to the Little Theatre (Beside the "Purple Rhino" in the turn-around) Consult the Route Map to see exactly where you'll be running/walking.
