About This Activity
Who are We? We are a group of dedicated friends and athletes that want to show our love and support for Nick Andrade and family as they journey toward recovery from a spinal cord injury.
Many of us know Nick from school, swimming, neighborhood or church. Nick graduated in 2012 from Charlotte Catholic High School. He was a year round swimmer at MAC and also swam for his high school. The Andrade family live in the Reserve neighborhood and are very active in their Catholic faith and their parish of St. Matthew. Their number of friends and supporters continues to grow. The support of prayers, financial assistance and love is beautiful to behold.
Many have already heard about this tragic accident. But for those that are visiting our site for the first time and have not met the Andrade family, this accident happened to Nick while he was in Brazil in September 2012. He dove into a river and sustained a serious spinal cord injury.
Although the Andrades loved the nurses and care they received in Brazil, The 2012 goal of many family and friends was to bring Nick home to Charlotte. Once in the states, the goal was to HELP NICK BREATHE. Nick has met with many doctors in many cities in the U.S. in the first half of the 2013. In July 2013, Nick traveled with the family to New Jersey, where he underwent an innovative nerve surgery intended to reactivate his diaphragm. The process has been slow but the surgery was successful. Soon after recovering from surgery, Nick has worked so diligently with physical therapist and family members to keep his body moving and wean off the ventilator. We give praise to God for the success to date as Nick is able to breathe on his own for up to 3 hours and we expect this progress to continue.
This year in May 2014 Nick has another surgery scheduled. This year the surgery is corrective neck surgery to prepare him to receive his own stem cells with the hope of regenerating the damaged nerves in his spinal cord. Again the family can use your prayers for Nick, his doctors and the family as they gear up for this surgery.
While Nick and family work hard to do what they need to do, let all of us show them our continued support. Mark your calendars now for September 13 and sign up NOW to run in this years 5k.
