About This Activity

The Charleston Transplant Home will host its 2nd annual 5k with a new 1 mile Fun Run to be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 9:00am at the Wando Shelter in James Island County Park.  Each 5k ticket includes a race day t-shirt!  We'll have music, food, a raffle, and race prizes for men and women in all age categories.  Top male and female winner will receive a $200 cash prize.  Dogs and kids are welcome so please join us for a fun day out with friends!

In 2015, the Medical University of South Carolina performed approximately 200 solid organ transplants on non-local transplant patients.  Each of these patients requires daily visits to MUSC for after-surgery care which also means they need to find safe and affordable accommodation for themselves and their caregivers.  The cost can be an undue burden at an already difficult time and finding room availability can be challenging in a city with a busy schedule of festivals, weddings, and popular community events.

The Charleston Transplant Home is a local 501(c) (3) with a goal to open a non-medical, ‘home away from home’ for South Carolina organ transplant patients seeking assistance with the cost and availability of after-surgery accommodation.  The Home will offer patients a chance to recover in a setting that provides amenities just like home and will allow them to be part of a larger community of transplant patients that will encourage friendship, support, and recovery.

Last year we raised over $15,000 and this year we will use that money to help subsidize the cost of hotel rooms for transplant patients in recovery.  We hope to raise even more this year to continue to offset the cost of local accommodation as well as to begin our journey to the dream goal of a permanent home!  We invite you to join our 5k and help make our Charleston Transplant Home 5k a success!
