About This Activity

Our father, Judge Dan Camp, lost his battle with gastro-esophageal cancer in July of 2013, after a courageous fight that amazed everyone who met him from doctors and nurses to colleagues, friends and family.  We are organizing a race, Jog for the Judge 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, to honor his life and raise money for esophageal and gastroesophageal cancer research at the University of Alabama of Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center in Birmingham, AL. There are many reasons that the Jog for the Judge 5K is an ideal event to honor the life of Dan Camp.

Dan loved Carrollton and everything about this special community. This will be an event that will bring our community together, young and old alike. The race will also promote a healthy lifestyle through fitness for the children and youth of our community through the 1 mile Fun Run, especially designed to reach out to those who have been involved in the Carroll County Juvenile Program.

Dan always loved being active and exercising, whether it was running, swimming or playing golf or tennis. Even while undergoing both chemo and radiation, he continued to exercise and amaze his medical team with his strength and determination. He would be the first one at the start line to run for such a cause.

Finally, Dan was determined to fight cancer from the very beginning and did so with such courage and grace that many in the community never even realized the significance of his disease. It is with this tenacity that we have to continue the fight. According to UAB, more than 17,500 new cases of esophageal cancer were diagnosed in 2012 resulting in over 15,000 deaths. The lifetime risk of esophageal cancer in the United States is about 1 in 400 in women and 1 in 125 in men. Symptomatic gastro-esophageal reflux is one of the primary risk factors for this type of cancer and awareness needs to be raised for early diagnosis and treatment.

UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment lefts and is one of the facilities where my father underwent treatment and received high quality care. 100% of the money that is raised through this event will be donated directly to UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and allocated specifically for esophageal and gastro-esophageal cancer research. Much research and education needs to be done, and it is up to us to help make that possible and provide the funds to a place that is dedicated to exactly that cause.

Please join us in the fight against cancer!
