About This Activity

RIDE for the CHILD is characterized by a spectacular course of varying distances (100 mile, 100k, 50K)  through some of the most beautiful areas Colorado has to offer. The crown jewel of the event is the Sopris Century Ride which starts near the base of Mount Sopris in the quaint town of Carbondale, Colorado.  The ride initially heads east, up the scenic Roaring Fork Valley, with miles of gorgeous riverfront riding next to the Roaring Fork River. In the distance the Maroon Bells wilderness and Snowmass ranges provide a perfect backdrop to the spectacular views of the Aspen and Snowmass ski areas.

The course begins on a designated bike path, free of auto traffic. Riders eventually depart from the path, riding along gently rolling terrain, meandering through farm and ranch land, with outstanding views. The Elk Mountain Range with it’s principal peaks; Haystack Mountain, Mount Daly and Capitol Peak are visible at numerous points along the ride. During the second half of the ride, participants will leave the valley floor and head north/west up to the Missouri Heights area, with the Red Table Mountain Range never far away. Lightly traveled rural roads wind gently throughout the farm and ranchland on this plateau. Amazing views to the south are highlighted by Mt. Sopris, Chair Mountain, Capitol Peak and Sunlight ski area. As you turn south to begin the final portion of your ride, Mount Sopris serves as your backdrop, guiding you on your return to Carbondale. The 100K and 50K rides follow the same general course as the 100 mile ride, albeit proportionately shorter. All three distances provide various amounts of elevation gain and climbing.  With grades ranging from 4-8%, punctuated by bursts of 10%, these routes offer plenty of challenge for all categories of riders.

Riders are expected to ride single file on the roads, and on the bike path….obeying rules of the road and signage at all times.  We will have sag/support vehicles circulating throughout the course, but riders should be prepared to fix flat tires or deal with minor mechanical issues, as notifying and obtaining support will take time.
