About This Activity

Josh Gulick and Emily Peterson are both going to be freshman at Burlington High School this coming fall.  Flashback to May of 7th grade of their Social Studies class, the teacher had a guest speakers come in and talk about India's villagers and water issues. Villagers had to drink out of prudent pits pigs bathe in due to lack of wells. Water Our Thirsty World, a non profit organization founded in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, raises funds to provide water purifiers and borehole wells. The two guest speakers had recently gotten back to America from a trip in India providing the villagers with the supplies. The teacher then came up with a challenge for them. It is only $200 for a water purifier and $500 for a well. Mr. Carper, the teacher, wanted Josh and Emily to try to raise funds by planning an event, he suggested a student vs. staff basketball game. They wanted to go on a bigger level than that though. Both of the students share a passion for running, so they decided to plan a 5k run/walk. Thus the 2013 Run 4 Water 5k was born. Held on Sept. 14, 2013, they had nearly 70 participants running and walking and close to $10,000 raised. Enough money for nineteen wells to be drilled. This year they are expanding the event to include a 5k run/walk and a duathlon, which is a run, bike, run event race. The 2014 Race 4 Water 5k and Duathlon will be held on August 30, 2014 at Crapo Park in Burlington, Iowa. Any support for the event would be appreciated!
