About This Activity

This fifth annual scholarship 5K race/walk honors Charles (Chuck) Pacholkiw, a graduate of the Bowie High Class of 2005 and a brilliant, diligent, passionate math and physics student.

Complimentary t-shirt for the first 100 registrants!

Door prizes to be awarded at race! Winners' prizes awarded to top male and female runner AND to top two male and female runners in each age group! Prizes include concert tickets, restaurant gift certificates, services and merchandise.

This 5K race starts and ends at the Bowie High School track. We will run a lovely, fast course (with a couple of gentle hills) through the neighborhoods surrounding our high school.

Chuck Pacholkiw: After graduating from Bowie High in 2005, Chuck attended the University of Maryland, where he continued to shine academically even after his diagnosis of advanced stage IV adenocarcinoma cancer. Chuck died in November 2010 at the age of 23, just a few credits away from finishing his physics degree.

In 2011, we established a scholarship fund in Chuck’s memory for Bowie High students pursuing a math, science or physics major in college. 100% of the proceeds from this race will go toward the Chuck Pacholkiw Memorial Scholarship to help a deserving graduating senior get a chance at becoming the next Stephen Hawking. It is our hope that this scholarship will honor Chuck’s memory by keeping his academic ambitions alive. To date, the Chuck Pacholkiw Memorial Scholarship has awarded over $14,000 in scholarship monies.
