About This Activity
Why did we want to do a 5k? It is because we love our community, our location, and what our community stands for - Giving back and helping others.
For this race we chose The Glenda Gooch Foundation as our beneficiary.
We wanted to showcase who we are, where we are and what we do. What better way to do this than a 5k?
This 5k is an opportunity to get to know your neighbors and to support a great cause. Or, it is an opportunity to just get out on a beautiful September morning and go for a run through downtown Blairsville with a few hundred of your friends. No matter your reason, we hope you will join us.
A little about the Glenda Gooch Foundation:
The Glenda Gooch Foundation is a non- profit organization that provides basic needs and help for needy families and children in the Union County area. The Foundation was formed to honor the memory of Glenda.
Glenda was born in Blairsville, Ga on April 6, 1985. She was diagnosed shortly after birth with severe congenital heart defects and underwent several major heart operations, including a heart transplant at the age of 8 years old.
In 2003, at the age of 18, Glenda was diagnosed with a type of lymphoma that only transplant patients get. She underwent chemotherapy and survived against all the odds. In late 2007 her body began rejecting her heart and Glenda went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 29, 2008.
Glenda was loved by everyone that knew her. She always had a smile on her face and was always an encouragement to those around her. She never let her disability define her life. To think of herself before she thought of others was something she just couldn't do. It is the mission of this foundation to give back to the community, or at least try to, the love and support that they always gave Glenda and her family. She loved this community with all of her heart and in working through this organization to help those in need she will live on.
