The goal of the Academy is to challenge each athlete and get them started off on the right foot for the summer. We don’t do 100 mile weeks, but we do train (20 miles for beginners to 60 for top end) smart. The athlete chooses how far to go with the counselors help. The campers will run with some of the best distance runners in the country and learn to train their way. We want everyone leaving the Academy motivated, excited, healthy and running.
This is one of the best staffs in ability, experience, enthusiasm, and excitement for the sport of running of any camp out there. Past staff members include Footlocker and Nike Nationals finalists, NCAA National Champions, a two time Olympian, several All Americans, experienced and successful coaches and a counselor to athlete ratio of 1:5. Most camps are 1 counselor for every 10 athletes. Athletes get guidance and the time commitment they deserve from an incredible staff.
Housing and Dining
Campers will be housed in an on-campus residence dorm located close to training facilities. All campers will eat, sleep, and live in the same manner as Tech student-athletes. Everyone will be housed in a Virginia Tech dormitory. On campus dining facilities will feed our campers and are only a short walk from the dorms and athletic fields. Meals are all-you-can-eat and each meal has a large variety of foods to choose from. VT Dining facilities have been ranked #1 in the nation. Excellent food!
Virginia Tech is one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. The famous Hokie stoned buildings, great facilities, and academic tradition sings of pride and strength. The athletes will be housed in one of VT’s residence halls which will give them a feel for what it is like to be in college. Virginia Tech has one of the finest food establishments in the nation (rated #1 food services in the country) and offers a wide variety of choices so your athlete will eat healthy and often.
Blacksburg, Virginia was chosen in many publications as one of the best small towns to live in the U.S. It is located in the mountains at 2000 feet and offers ideal running weather because of warm days and cool evenings. Some runs do take place at 3000 feet. The campus is surrounded by trails and the Jefferson National Forest. Athlete will run on a grass cross country course that hosted the ACC Championships in 2012 and on wooded and mountain trails.
Training will be based on individual experience. Our goal is a motivating and meaningful camp without injuries or over training. Camp will include two-a- day runs, optional pool workout, circuits, plyometrics and daily strength training. Runs will be over the VT Cross Country course, Jefferson National Forest, and surrounding VT trails. There will be free time to rest, play volleyball, ultimate, or just talk to new friends. Plus group activities like river tubing and hikes into the Cascades.
