About This Activity
National Veterans Day in Birmingham hosts a 5K Family Fun Run/Walk in order to raise funds for veteran charities and raise awareness of all the events held in Birmingham during Veterans Day weekend. In addition, we have a 10K Veteran Challenge for the runner who would like a new challenge. The 10K Veteran Challenge is a RUCK race with an emphasis on teams. (Individuals may run the race, but we encourage you to find a team of 4 or more.) Rucks are weighted backpacks or vests - 40 lbs. for the men and 25 lbs. for the women. Team time will be the average of all team participants. (*Due to availability of 40 lb. versus 45 lb. vest at sporting good stores, we have decreased the men's weight requirement.) ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT VETERAN CHARITIES! The charities will be determined by teams competing in the 10K. The military unit with the best time will receive 40% of the proceeds for their charity. Second Place will receive 20% and third receives 10%. The civiilan team with the fastest average time wil recieve 30% for the veteran charity of their choice. Teams (or a representative of the team) will hand a representative of the charity their checks at the World Peace Luncheon on Veterans Day (Tuesday, November 11) before the Birmingham Veterans Day parade.
Event details and schedule
AWARDS: 5K Family Fun Run/Walk - We will be recognizing 1st - 3rd place in 3 catagories (Men, Women,Youth Under 13). Each winner will receive a medal. First Place winners will also be recognized at the World Peace Luncheon held on Veterans Day (Tuesday, Nov. 11th) before the Veterans Day Parade. They will receive 2 tickets for the event ($50 Value). 10K RUCK Challenge – We will be recognizing the 1st - 3rd place for Individual Men and Individual Women. First Place winners will be recognized at the World Peace Luncheon and receive 2 tickets for the event. Military Unit winners will receive a portion of the proceeds for the veteran charity of their choice (1st place – 40%, 2nd place – 20%, 3rd place – 10%). The 1st place Team Unit will receive the remaining 30% for a veteran charity of their choice. These teams will present representatives of their charity checks at the World Peace Luncheon.
